New Caney ISD Board of Trustees Calls for May Bond Election

The New Caney ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved calling for a bond election for May 5, 2018. The Board will seek $200 million in bonds for the construction of new campuses or replacement of existing campuses, for purchasing land for future facilities, and for updates to existing facilities.

Passage of the bond will not affect the tax rate for property owners in the district.

New Caney ISD is one of the fastest growing school districts in the greater Houston area and the entire state, growing by more than 30% over the last five years. Recent demographic studies project continued student enrollment growth in the coming years. The school district partnered with engineering, planning and program management services firm Lockwood, Andrews, & Newman during the past year to conduct a facilities condition assessment, develop construction design standards, and complete a long range facilities plan. A planning committee, comprised of parents, community members, and district staff, produced a long range facility report for the Board of Trustees in which potential projects were identified and prioritized based on campus capacities and demographic studies, condition of the district’s facilities, and instructional program considerations. Recommendations included a third comprehensive high school, a fifth middle school, replacement or additional elementary schools, and land for future facilities. The final project list for the 2018 bond would include some combination of these items based on the district’s current bond capacity and costs estimates.

“Planning is critical in a fast-growth school district like New Caney ISD,” Superintendent Kenn Franklin said. “I would like to thank the long range planning committee for its work these past few months and the Board of Trustees for its consideration and support of a bond election this year. New Caney ISD will publish and share more detailed information regarding potential bond projects in the coming weeks and will work to share that information with parents, employees, and the public.”

Election Day is May 5, 2018. The deadline to register to vote is April 5. Early voting begins April 23. For information on voting times and locations, visit www.newcaneyisd.org/elections. To learn more about the 2018 bond or find updates on previous bond projects, visit www.newcaneyisd.org/bondnews.
